“PENN Fishing Tackle has been at the forefront of modern reel design and production since 1932. The Miss Britt Fleet has used Penn Tackle since the first Miss Britt boat was built in 1999. One of the strongest advantages that Penn holds over their competitors is their willingness to listen to anglers in the field. Over the years, I have participated in some of the product development meetings, and can tell you that “Mike Rice and his team are building some of the best reels that Penn has ever produced”

–Capt. Ray Rosher

  • Conventional Tackle

LT/MED. Conv./sailfish reels for kite fishing

Fathom 40 Narrow Lever Drag High Speed
This is our go to reel for both charter and tournament fishing because of its high rate of retrieval and lightweight design . One of the great features of this reel is that it has a very large range of drag. Some other reels that I have used in the past had very short ranges of adjustment. Clicker resistance is perfect for kite fishing. The clicker resistance is also perfect for letting out kite baits without backlash. We have had very good results with the durability of this reel. We usually back this reel with 500 yards of 20lb ProSpec white braid; we then top it off with about 200 yards of 20lb orange ProSpec monofilament(we like to use white and orange offshore because it is easier to follow in the blue water).
Specs for this product:
Weight: 24.7oz
Line Capacity: 410/30 (mono) or 785/50 (braid)
Retrieve Rate: 60” p.c.
Max Drag: 40lb

Torque Star Drag: This the Fathom’s 40 beautiful cousin. This gold anodized also has a very good range of drag, a fairly high rate of retrieve, lightweight.
Weight: 16.90oz
Retrieve Rate: 28” p.c.
Max Drag: 25lb

  • Electric Reels

International VI 30 W
The hooker electric conversion makes the Penn 30 wide the fastest retrieving electric reel on the market. The reason we use a 30 wide instead of a 30 is because the line capacity of the 30 wide allows for both an 80 lb monofilament kite line underneath an 80lb braid kite line. We use the 80lb braid kite line when the wind is about 20 knots or less. When the wind exceeds 20 knots, we simply wind the braid kite line onto a yo-yo for later use. We find that the 80lb mono is much safer to handle and easier to control than braid in high wind. The other advantage of this setup is that the open faced reel eliminates clearance issues with either the swivels or the floss marks that we use to stop the clips at the proper distances apart. We use the Floss kite line, M2 kite clips, and R2 kite clips from R&R Tackle with these reels.
Weight: 55oz
Line Capacity:1385/20 1030/30 800/40
Retrieve Rate: 41” p.c.
Max Drag: 30lb

International VI 70
This is our go to reel for daytime Swordfishing. We rig it with approximately 2,500 yds of 80 white ProSpec braid and a 150lb or 200lb X 150’ swordfish wind-on leader from R&R Tackle. This rod is not too big or too small–you can fish this rod the entire time in the holder, or you can remove the motor and fish it in the harness.
